This is to inform you that the United Theological College has a unique programme for preparing the candidates coming from socially and economically marginalized and rural backgrounds, for ministry.  The programme is designed to provide general knowledge, scripture knowledge, social skills and communicative ability.  Kindly find a copy of the announcement for the Academic Guidance Programme – 2015.  I shall be grateful to you, if you could kindly give wide publicity to the enclosed announcement and advise the prospective candidates for ministry in your Church to apply for the same. PROGRAMME FOR B.D. CANDIDATES FROM MARGINALIZED AND RURAL BACKGROUNDS

In response to the needs of candidates from marginalized and rural backgrounds who are planning to pursue their theological studies at the United Theological College (UTC), Bangalore, the College offers a programme, in order to help them get acquainted with the academic atmosphere of the UTC and to assist them in improving their knowledge as well as their academic skills.  The UTC, therefore, invites applications from socio-economically deprived candidates from the rural backgrounds, especially women, Dalits and Tribals, who are aspiring to do theological studies.  This programme will be held as follows:

Duration of the Programme: September 30^th to October 17^th, 2015.

Eligibility:     Graduate/Post-graduate from a recognized University.

Only a limited number of scholarships are available to cover tuition fees, boarding and lodging to selected candidates and no family scholarships are provided.

The Alumni Refresher Programme for this year will be held from 27-29 October, 2015, and the theme for this year is ‘Being Together: Fulfilling the Great Commission in Context.’

Quiet Day in UTC

The first Quiet Day of the academic year 2015-16 of the United Theological College will be held today and tomorrow in the Ziegenbalg chapel of the UTC. Monsignor Fr. Dr. S. Jayanathan, the director of the Archdiocesan Communication Centre of the Catholic Church, Bangalore Archdiocese will be the Quiet Day leader. The Quiet Day sessions start today evening at 8 P.M. and continue tomorrow at 8:30 A.M., 11 A.M. and 3 P.M.

Monsignor Fr. Jayanathan is the Vicar General of the diocese and has held various positions in different churches and institutions of the Catholic Church in Bangalore. He is a well known preacher and retreat leader.

Diploma in Ecojustice Ministries Programme

Applications are invited for admission to the Diploma in Ecojustice Ministries Programme at the United Theological College. It is a global online study programme particularly meant for pastors, laity, students, professionals and those interested in conversations on ecological concerns.

Visit to First Assemly Of God Church

The first year BD students of United Theological College, Bangalore had a spiritual encounter and openness to the inter denominational diversities as they paid their visit to First Assembly of God Church, Bangalore on 5^th July 2015 under the aegis of Sr. Dr. Mary Shruti Joseph, SND. The group had reached the church well in advance and was welcomed as well as challenged by the intercessory prayer just before the service. Most of the students of the group were brought up in traditional churches and the visit was a perfect first door opened to the inter denominational diversities of Christian Faith and Worship. The worship was started with an opening prayer followed by a different presentation of praise and worship, welcome note and prayer of confession which was then followed by the breaking of the bread and came to a conclusion with the word of God. The students of the group were fascinated, moved and provoked by all the proceedings of the church. In a nutshell the visit has instilled and stirred up the importance of their (students) own traditions with accordance with an outlook to a wider community of faith.

First Ecclesial Visit in a Nutshell

As many as 38 saplings of the United Theological College garden kicked off their first ecclesial journey in style on June 28, 2015 to St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in the heart of Bengaluru city. With full enthusiasm we walked to the Cathedral which is close by and we got a warm welcome by the authorities as well.

We got the first hand information on the tradition of the catholic churches and also it made easy for us to differentiate the tradition of ours. Though we worship the same Lord everywhere, the way of worship and concept of Order of Service differ.

Putting incense around the Altar was new to most of us. During the Service people maintained the sanctity of worship. Another feature of the Catholic tradition is that the deacon with the permission and blessings of the chief priest read the Gospel passage and delivered the sermon. Interestingly, before reading the Gospel passage the deacon offered incense to the Holy Bible.

Only after going to this Cathedral we realized that this Sunday was the 13^th Sunday of this year and they were very particular about this. The sermon was based on Mark 5:21-43. This passage talks about mainly on ‘simple faith’ which was apt for the theological students like us.

One more thing we noticed is that the diocese of Karnataka has circulated the passage and required material for the service. A pamphlet which was in circulation suggests us that the diocese decides the subject for every week and circulates the same across the state. So whichever part of the state you go you will hear the same sermon on that particular day.
