Re-Reading Passion Narratives through Gender Lens


We are in the season of Lent – A time for critical self-reflection on Christian Spirituality, Faith and Discipleship. The Women’s Studies Department of United Theological College which completed twenty years of its existence in February 2014 is happy to invite you to a day of theological reflection on meaningful engagement in struggle for Life, Love and Justice in a context that is surrounded by situations of violence.

We invite you to this day of reflection on Monday, March 10, 2014 that would begin with special worship at 8.30 am in front of the library and conclude at 3.30 p.m. with tea. The venue for the seminar will the J.R. Chandran Seminar Hall.

The Programme for the Day includes the following:
  • RE-reading Passion Narratives in the Gospels from a feminist Perspective
  • Events of Life, Love and Light tucked in the midst of death, lovelessness..
  • Assessing Women’s Engagement in the struggles of Life, participation in civil society movements
  • Searching for “Life in Abundance” in our own Gardens

Dr. Rini Ralte



Dr. Rini Ralte hails from Mizoram and she belongs to the Presbyterian Church of India, Mizoram Synod. Dr. Ralte is an activist theologian who is deeply committed for the cause of women. She is actively engaged in social, political and religious issues particularly related to the poor and women. She states that "my commitment to my work is beyond 24 hours" and she is ever ready for any assistance in relation to the life of children and women. She is professor and chairperson of the Women's Studies Department in the United Theological College, Bangalore.
EARNED THEOLOGICAL DEGREES

2004                Doctor of Theology (D.Th) in the area of Theology from the Senate of Serampore College (University).  My Dissertation was on The Contributions to the Ecofeminist Debate in Theology From A Tribal Woman’s Perspective.

1993                Doctor of Ministry (D.Min) from the Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Boston, USA.  Dissertation was on Crab Theology: A Feminist Critique of Cultural Degradation and Empowerment of Mizo Women

1989                Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) from the Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.  My Dissertation was on A Manual for Discovering the History, Spirituality and Theology of Women as a Liberating Force For Christian Churches in Mizoram.

1985                Bachelor of Theology (BD) from the United Theological College, Bangalore

1980                BA from Aizawl College, Aizawl, Mizoram.

Engaging with powers: International Women's Day Celebrations in UTC


The Women's Studies department of the United Theological College organized a four day seminar  from March 7-11, 2012 to celebrate the International Women's Day. The theme of the seminar was "Engaging  with Powers: Expressions of Faith Lived Out in Context." The seminar had renowned scholars from various fields giving presentations on topics ranging from body, media, violence, power, justice, liturgy, theology, social change, human trafficking, women's ordination, resistance motifs, nuclear disasters and renewable energy. The host of resource persons included Ms. Shahina K.K., Dr. Ettienne Rassendren, Ms. Ammu Joseph, Mr. Anto Akkara, Mr. Ashok Pannikar and Ms. Cheryl Rebello, Ms. Laxmi Murthy, Ms. Brinda Adige, Dr. Aruna Gnanadasan, Dr. Arati Choksi and a host of other eminent persons.
Rev. Dr. Evangeline Anderson Rajkumar and Dr. Rini Ralte were the co-ordinators of the programme and they were helped by the students of the Women's Studies department along with other students of the college.
