Dr. Nalini Arles



Dr. Nalini Arles

Dr. Nalini Arles is currently the Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Christian Ministry Department in the United Theological College. She is a distinguished alumnus of New College, University of Edinburgh where she completed her Doctoral Degree. Dr.Nalini is presently serving as the Doctoral Dean. She also served as the Acting Registrar for the September Term. She defines herself as a strict person who stands by her convictions which have taken her to this level. Being a counsellor she is someone who identifies with people in their distressing situations. She has travelled extensively and she is enriched with the enormous experiences that she has gained from these wide exposures.
Family details
Dr.Nalini is married to renowned Missiologist Dr. Siga Arles. He is a prolific writer and scholar in the field of Missiology. At present he heads the organization Contemporary Center for Christianity. They are blessed with two children. The eldest son Naveen is a musician who is based in London at present. Recently he was invited to the House of Commons. Younger son is Sandhesh who is married to Pamila who is an American. He is working as a Financial Analyst. The family exists as an exemplary model of Christian witnessing.
Remarkable Positions Held
·         She was the President of the International Council on Pastoral care and Council for a term.
·         She served as the President and the Vice President of Asia Pacific Council on Pastoral Care and Counselling
·         She is one of the founding members of Association of Theologically Trained Women in India. She also served as the President of the same in 1970.
·         She has taught in a few of the prestigious universities all around the globe. She has had the privilege of teaching in Graduate Theological Union Berkley, Lutheran Theological seminary Minneapolis, St.Thomas University Miami. She was also associated with the Society for Inter-cultural Mission and Pastoral Work.
Contributions to the academic, eclessia and society in the year 2012-13
·         Presented a paper as part of the Faculty Research Seminar in UTC entitled “The Psychology of the Terrorists” which has grabbed the attention of many.
·         Led a session on the theme “Women of Yesterday and Today”.
·         Handled a workshop on “Child Sexual Abuse” for CMS Hostel Wardens at Nagercoil.
·         Handled a workshop for NGO leaders on women empowerment and conflict resolution models.
·         She has preached in various churches in and around Bangalore.
·         She was instrumental in organizing a protest at KGF against Government’s decision of dumping the  Nuclear Waste of Koodankulam at KGF.
·         She is also engaged in Counselling.
A Ray of Hope for those in Distress
Dr.Nalini along with her husband runs an NGO named India Ministries Fellowship. The NGO has three centres which are Boys’ Home at Thiruthanny which accommodates 45 boys, a Girls’ Home at KGF which accommodates 110 girls and a centre to take care of the children of alcoholic parents at Madhavaram, Chennai. In Madhavaram the NGO provides lunch for Senior Citizens. The organization has more than 25 staff members. They also run other institutions such as Tailoring Units, DMLT lab, a primary school and a Nursing school. The NGO has changed the destiny of hundreds of children from poor families. It aims at the holistic development of the children.There are Doctors, Dentists, IT Professionals and many others who are well settled now, who were once part of these Children’s Homes.
Dr. Nalini looks back at her life with contentment for what she has achieved so far. “Walking her talk” is her life’s motto. She believes in practicing what she believes than talking about it always. This is her constant prayer that “God grant me an alert mind till the end”.  Her relentless fight for justice still continues to inspire many. She stands out as a unique personality in the theological arena with her out of the box thinking and vision.

Dr. Joseph George



Dr. Joseph George is one of the distinguished professors in the Department of Christian Ministry teaching counseling in the United Theological College, Bangalore. He was born in Puthukkulam, near Chengara in Kerala. He is living in the UTC main campus with his wife Joyce Joseph and two children. The elder one is Sajeena Mary Joseph, who finished her MCA and is now teaching in an International school in Bangalore. The younger one is Sajo George Joseph doing his MA Economics at St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore. 

Dr. Joseph George joined the faculty panel of the United Theological College in June 1992. Before triggering his career in UTC, he was teaching in the Clark Theological College, Nagaland for ten years from 1982-1992. He secured his BA (Sociology), B Th (Allahabad), B.D from the UBS, Pune, M Th from the United Theological College, Bangalore and D Th from the Candler School of Theology, Emery University.
Besides teaching in UTC, Bangalore he trains people for counseling and is also practicing counseling in Bangalore. 

The time-line of Dr. Joseph George’s experiences in the last one year (2012-13):
Last one year he took classes in the Bangalore Baptist Hospital for the course DCPC (Diploma `for Clinical Pastoral Counseling). Besides, he was a visiting professor in the Clark Theological College, Nagaland. He served as one of the resource persons in the TAFTEE Bangalore. In the ecclesial circle also, he proved his excellence. He was the Passion Week speaker in the St. Mark’s Cathedral Bangalore which was scheduled on 2nd, 3rd and 4th April 2012.

For a ten days programme, in the month of November 2012 he was invited by the Karnataka Central Diocese as a trainer in Basic Skills in Counseling which was organized by the Women’s Department of the KCD. From December 9-19, 2012 he was invited by the Dharma Jyothi Seminary Vidya Peeth (Marthoma Seminary), Faridabad, Delhi to teach courses “Introduction to Pastoral Care and Counseling” and “Marriage and Family Counseling.” On the 26th of January 2013, he was the guest speaker for the family retreat which was held at the Tambaram Marthoma Church, Chennai. Adding to this, he was the retreat speaker at the Kerala United Theological Seminary Trivandrum on February 13, 2013. 

His skills in counseling were recognized by various churches in Bangalore and he led the main sessions on a family seminar organized by the All Saints Church, Bangalore on February 17th Sunday. On the 20th and 27th of February, he was the speaker for the Lenten meditations at the St. Mark’s Cathedral Bangalore on which he preached on the topics “Discipline of mind” (20th Feb) and “Discipline of Speech” (27th Feb). On the 27th of February 2013, Dr. Joseph George presented a paper on “Changing Patterns of Relationships in the Cyberage: Challenges and Directions for Ministry in India” in UTC whose discussion was initiated by Rev. Fr. Jerry Kurian (Lecturer in the Dept. of Communication, UTC).

He also wrote his studies in “A Study Book on Counseling” edited by Rev .Dr. George Varghese which was published by the CSS Thiruvalla. His study occupies the major part of the book where he discusses on the topic “Marriage and Family Counseling.” His major publications in the past year include the articles “Preparing for Marriage” and “Developing Emotional Maturity” which was published in “Christian Family in Transition: Continuity and Discontinuity” edited by Rev. Dr. Koshy P. Varghese, published by Dharma Jyoti Vidya Peeth: Haryana on October 2012.
