New dining hall open

The new dining hall of the UTC Centenary Mahatma Gandhi Hostel opened yesterday with prayer followed by dinner at 8 P.M. Mrs. Lydia Joshua , the principal of the Bishop Cotton Girls' school, Bangalore and Rev. Victor Joshua opened the kitchen and unveiled the tablet mentioning the help from Bishop Cotton Girls' school, Bangalore.

The dining hall has a modern kitchen and space for all hostel students to sit and dine at the same time. The kitchen will make use of technology to reduce cooking gas consumption.

The Bishop Cotton Girls' school donated money for the construction of the kitchen. The demolition of the former hostel due to the weakness in the structure had lead to the students having to use a very small place for dining. With the opening of the new dining hall, this problem is now solved.

The mess co-ordinators for this month are Mr. Andrews Christopher and Mr. Vinod Shemron. Yesterday night's dinner was for the whole community in UTC.

Public Lecture on "The Bible and Asia"

A public lecture on the book "The Bible and Asia" by Dr. R.S. Sugirtharajah and its review by Mr. Narasiah was held on March 3rd at the Zigenbalg chapel in the UTC. The seminar was jointly organized by the Board of Theological Education of the Senate of Serampore College (BTESSC) and the Department of Biblical Studies of the United Theological College.

The session began with opening prayer by  Rev. Dr. Vincent Rajkumar, director of CISRS, Bangalore. Dr. John Samuel Raj, the principal of the United Theological College, Bangalore moderated the session and in his introductory remarks, Dr. John Samuel Raj made initial observations about the relevance of the book. Dr. Mohan Larbeer, BTESSC, formally welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest speaker to the participants.

In his lecture, ‘Celebration of the Book,’ Mr. Narasiah briefly summarized the content of the seven chapters of the book and explained the various stages of the reception of the Bible in Asia. He informed the audience about the several links between the biblical narratives and the native culture of India. He also emphasized the transformation of the Bible from a book of inspiration to a book of religion and later to a book of aggression by colonial powers. He highlighted the fact that the book was about the reception of the Bible in Asia. Narasiah, however, emphasized that the bible could be a medium of coming together of two societies. He congratulated the author for his convictions and courage for initiating a conversation between the two cultures without taking sides.

The response to the review was initiated by Dr. David Joy, who critically viewed  the methodology Sugirtharaj had adapted to study the two cultures – West and East. He also questioned the possibility of how best one can construct the pre-Christian era, without which the study would be superficial. Questions were also raised on the content of myths and metaphors the author used in the book, which are completely ignored as oppressive in nature by the native communities to which the book addresses.

Later, the floor was open for discussion and questions. Critical questions revolved around relevance or irrelevance of post-colonial methodology which the author has adopted in his book, saying it is time to dismantle post colonial methodology and move beyond. Comments were also made of the lack of sensitivity to the Indian and Asian context(s), especially to glaring poverty and inequality.

Dr. Sugirtharajah was part of the deliberations through video conferencing arranged by the Department of Communication of the UTC. In his response Dr. Sugirtharajah said post colonial methodology is appropriate as long as neo-colonial forces are at work in this world. He also said, we should not consider our contribution to biblical studies as an alternative, but see it along with western methodology. The seminar encouraged the participants to look at the scripture anew.

The public lecture concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Dexter S. Maben, the acting chairperson of the department of Biblical Studies.

College day in UTC

The 104 th college day of the UTC was held in the Ranson Hall of the UTC yesterday at 4:00 P.M. The chief guest of the programme Advocate Rajendra Sail, the founder general secretary of the Raipur Churches Development and Relief Committee (RCDRC) and president of the Chattisgarh Unit of the People's Union for Civil Liberties gave a thought provoking and hard hitting talk on how theological education should be changed to become relevant today.

India needs a cow-dung theology where theology should emerge from the organic engagement of the church with the experiences of the rural masses in India, he said. Recollecting his forty years of association with the United Theological College, which started during his tenure at the Christian Institute for the Study of Religion and Society under the mentorship of M M Thomas, he observed that the purpose of theological education has been reduced to the manufacturing of pastors who preach, chant and stay away from trouble.

Instead, he proposed the need for a radical envisioning so that the church will become an ally of social movements in India by participating actively in their struggles to create a new world. Drawing from his five decades long vocation as a social activist in Chattisgarh, Advocate Sail gave a contextual analysis of Indian society and challenged the community to pitch their tents in the lives of the rural communities to witness how God is making all things new through the agency of the dalits, women and other oppressed communities. To this end, he called upon the community to consider closing down UTC for one year, and invited the students and faculty to share in the lives of the rural communities for a year, and then come back to the college to engage with the bible and other sources. He also proposed a radical involvement with the social movements such as POSCO and Narmada as a component in theological education. He concluded his speech with the poem, “If you believe in heaven, make it a reality in the here and now.”

The Principal, Rev. Dr. John Samuel Raj presented a detailed report of the activities of the College during the academic year 2013-14. Dr. Nalini Arles, the faculty adviser of the College Day Celebrations welcomed and introduced the chief guest, and Mr. Gandham Daniel Vivek, the convener of the College Day Celebrations proposed the vote of thanks. Students and friends from the Kolar Gold Fields presented cultural progrmmes. Rev. Dr. R. Sahayadhas said the opening prayer, and the celebrations came to an end with prayer and benediction by Rev. Dr. C. I. David Joy.
